The Bakemono monsters depicted in the scroll:

• Kami-Kiri (“hair-cutter” 髪切) are known
for sneaking up on people and cutting off
their hair.
• A Nekomata (猫また) cat demon plays
the shamisen next to a Kitsune (狐), the
fox demon.
• The Yuki-Onna (“snow woman” 雪女)
appears on snowy nights as a beautiful
woman with long hair.

• Akashita (“red tongue” 赤舌) is a hairy-
faced creature with clawed hands that is covered in dark clouds.
• Buraribi (ぶらり火) is a white bird-like
creature surrounded by ghostly flames.
• Yamawaro (山童) is a one-eyed spirit with
three legs, covered with leaves or feathers
that is found in the mountains.

• Ushi-oni (ox demon 牛鬼) is a human-
eating beast that resides near bodies of water with the head of a cow and the body
of a giant spider or crab.

• Dōmo-kōmo (どうもこうも) is a mysterious
two-faced creature who wears a kimono.
• Hajikkaki (はぢっかき) have round white
bodies with short arms and legs and are
spawned from spirits of those who died
from utter humiliation.
• Yamamba (山姥) is a scary mountain hag.
• Uwan (うわん) is a creature that lives in
abandoned buildings, named for the
distinctive sound it makes, crying out
from the darkness: “Uwan!”

• Uma-shika (馬鹿) is a comical horse-like
creature with a horn on its head and a
single bulging eye.
•Nobusuma (のぶすま) is an animal spirit
that was once an ordinary bat. It has a
brown body, humanlike face, spiky hair,
claws, and sharp black teeth.
• Sara-hebi (さら蛇) is a large, snake-like
creature with the head of a woman.
•Daichiuchi (大地打) is a mallet-wielding
monster with a bird-like face who hits the
ground to cause earthquakes.
• Oyajirome (親白眼) can see those who
sneak up on it with its bulging eye on the
back of its head, tearing victims apart with
the claw on its one-fingered hand.
• Boukon (亡魂) is a departed soul that
appears to have pale blue skin, long hair,
and a distended belly.
• Mi-no-kedachi (身の毛立) is an ugly spirit
that has a coat of body hair that stands on end, resembling an unpleasant old man.
• Odoroshi (おどろし) is a fearsome and rare
red-faced creature with big eyes, black
teeth, and long hair that acts as a guardian
of holy places.
• Rokurokubi (ろくろくび) is a long-necked
woman whose head roams freely at night,
pictured next to an Inugami (犬神) dog spirit.
• Yume-no-seirei (“dream ghost” 夢の精霊)
appears as a thin old man in a white robe
and is believed to cause nightmares.
